A great and incredible rare Handel Cimelia of one of his best operas

Extremely rare first edition of the full score of one of Handel's early operas with the magnificent frontispiece in copperplate engraving. For us only 2 copies in the trade since 1950 traceable!
"Handel's Tamerlano is among the operas of the first rank to reach a stage." (Antoine-Elisée Cherbuliez: George Frideric Handel. Olten 1949.) Handel, who held the position of music teacher to the princesses, did the court the favor of preparing an opera version of the play "Tamerlane" directed against Louis XIV of France. The play, which opened the opera season at the King's Theatre Haymarket on October 31, 1724, was performed nine times in October and November alone, making it a great success. Today, the opera is one of Handel's most important. It is about the power struggle between the Mongol conqueror Tamerlano and the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire Bajazet, who is his prisoner. Tamerlano desires Asteria, Bajazet's daughter, but the father wants to die rather than leave the daughter to the enemy. The main character of Bajazet was sung by a tenor, contrary to the custom of the time, while the Mongol conqueror is embodied by a countertenor. At the end of the third act, Handel created one of the most extraordinary and harrowing scenes of his operatic work with the large-scale suicide of Bajazet. The tyrant is softened by this, leaves Asteria to her lover Andronico and marries his fiancée Irene. - In 2012, Placido Domingo thrilled Salzburg Festival audiences in the role of Bajazet, making the opera a highlight of the Festival. - Copy owned by blind harpist John Parry with his handwritten ex-libris. - Coll. Hoboken 43; Smith, 72/1; RISM H 350.
