Title with library stamp. 2 leaves slightly edgeworn. Few leaves with light waterstains, otherwise exceptionally nice copy with wide margins and practically free of stains. - Gestochener Aquatinatitel, gestochener Titel, 183 S. (S. 1 unbedruckt). Titel mit Bibliotheksstempel. 2 Blatt am Rand etwas angesetzt. Wenige Bl. mit leichtem Wasserrand, sonst ausnehmend schönes, breitrandiges und praktisch fleckenfreies Exemplar. Half leather in contemporary style - Halblederband im Stil der Zeit.

Early, beautifully engraved edition. - The 15 fugues and 3 canons contained therein, as well as 2 fugues for 2 harpsichords, are notated in the piano part and in modern clefs, with the score-like 4-part presentation in the old clefs above. The original edition of 1751 as well as its title edition of 1752 were either given away or only "sold in about three hundred copies" (C. Ph. E. Bach). Bach's son found the storage a burden and offered the printing plates for sale or had them melted down. It was not until 50 years later that the Swiss publisher Nägeli published the first "reprint" of Bach's "musical legacy". The work appeared in the series "Musikalische Kunstwerke im strengen Style von J. S. Bach und andern Meistern". - Present edition in score with piano reduction underneath. With the often missing beautiful series title in aquatint by Lale after Saitomer. - Frühe, schön gestochene Ausgabe. - Die darin enthaltenen 15 Fugen und 3 Kanons, sowie 2 Fugen für 2 Cembali sind im Klaviersatz und in modernen Schlüsseln notiert, darüber die partiturmäßige 4-stimmige Darstellung in den alten Schlüsseln. Die Originalausgabe von 1751 sowie deren Titelauflage von 1752 wurden entweder verschenkt oder lediglich in "ungefähr dreyssig Exemplaren abgesetzt" (C. Ph. E. Bach). Bachs Sohn empfand die Aufbewahrung als Last und bot die Druckplatten zum Kauf an bzw. ließ sie einschmelzen. Erst der Schweizer Verleger Nägeli veröffentlichte 50 Jahre später den ersten "Neudruck" von Bachs "musikalischem Vermächtnis". Das Werk erschien in der Reihe "Musikalische Kunstwerke im strengen Style von J. S. Bach und andern Meistern". - Vorliegende Ausgabe in Partitur mit unterlegtem Klavierauszug.
