  • Decorative album leaf with the opening bar of a composition for violin. Celebrated as the "second Paganini," Kubelik was one of the great world-renowned Czech violinists, along with Ferdinand Laub, Frantisek Ondricek and Jaroslav Kocian. Kubelik passed the final examination at the Prague Conservatory at the age of 18 with Paganini's Concerto op. 6. "At his first foreign concert in Vienna (also in 1898) with the same concerto, he caused a real sensation and was classified by M. Kalbeck as 'one of the first in the world of violin playing.' This was the beginning of a brilliant artistic career that lasted 42 years and reached all over the world" (MGG VII, 1846). In 1902, he received the golden Beethoven Medal, "which, among violinists, only J. Joachim and E. Ysage received" (ibid.).
